Leader... SHIP?

I have a quirky sense of humor, and love the show "The Office." The boss, Michael Scott, leaves much to be desired of a leader. I don't think he could ever allow himself to think of servant leadership. He is the type of leader that wants and thrives off of POWER. I just love his staffs' way of stearing the ship off course. Enjoy the laugh!

Dialogue?

When I wrote my very first blog back in March, I really didn't know that there was a difference between dialogue and discussion. This strikes me as funny, because somehow I did choose the correct word of dialogue. That is really what I hope for my blog. I have no ulterior motive, I'm not trying to draft teachers. I'm trying to share my experiences as a teacher and also just talk about our experiences.

I started a 2-year leadership program this last weekend, and I can't wait for our next meeting. I think it's fairly sad that in my 27 years, and my five years of teaching I don't think I have really truly self-reflected as much as I should. I've written many reflection papers, and I have responded to lesson plans, I have even kept notes and logged comments, etc. But I haven't done personal self-reflection in too long! It's always for assignments or really for someone else to read. I think this program will allow to be really look at my own teaching, leading, values, goals, etc. I can't wait to go back. Why a blog-- what do I really have to say?

This is my fifth year of teaching... and the fifth year I have told myself I was going to try to journal and keep track of my "adventures in teaching." A recent set of technology workshops I have attended has posed the challenge of creating a blog, responding to blogs; and what better chance to start my five-year long process.

My hope is the start a dialogue with current teachers and those considering the field of education. The economy is not very teacher friendly right now in my home state of Michigan-- a stat on the news today said that 75% of this years graduates obtaining teaching certificates will be leaving the state to find a full time teaching job. How sad... :( There's also the disheartening statistics about how many teachers leave the field within the first three years.

I'm not going to try to make the job sound perfect-- there are ridiculous amounts of pressures and stress. And no corporate world-- the June/July/August reasoning doesn't work-- we work long hours, take hours of work home, and pay for our own professional development (which isn't optional), and are somewhat underpaid compared with many corporate types with the same or less education. My purpose here is to enlighten, and encourage people who love helping inspire, and who want to make a positive difference to many wonderful young people.

That's it for now-- I have to rest up for the little gremlins tomorrow.
